RISE Book Study PLC
Launching February 2021

Summary: Each RISE Book Study PLC will be led by an Assistant Principal at a RISE school and attended by a group of 3-5 teachers/staff at that school. The purpose of this group is to facilitate collaborative leadership development opportunities that meet the needs of their school community while allowing the AP to practice leading a small group and serving as a mentor to develop key skills within their staff.

Benefits:

APs (Facilitators) at RISE Schools:

  • Gain experience leading a school-based group of aspiring leaders, expand adult learning skills, and build rapport with teachers and staff.

  • Prepare for further leadership within or beyond their school building by identifying and addressing strengths and needs within their school that will be addressed through the PLC.

Teachers and Staff (Participants) at RISE Schools:

  • Receive targeted learning from a trusted leader who knows their school’s strengths and needs.

  • Develop leadership capacity within their current role that will meet the immediate needs of their classroom and school building.

Role & Responsibilities

APs who are selected to lead a PLC at their school will be responsible for tailoring the content to best suit their school’s strengths and needs. However, the following guardrails will be implemented to ensure an intentionally constructed experience across all participating schools:

Facilitator:

  • Participates in the introductory book study training with Leslie Edwards.

  • Manages all logistical and instructional elements of the PLC, to include reading all material in advance of assigning it, scheduling and leading 4 sessions of the PLC, and creating a safe environment conducive to open academic discussion.

  • Creates opportunities for participants to apply what they are learning to their current role(s) and school setting.

  • Ensures all discussions and content shared with participants aligns with DCPS mission and vision.

  • Must have principal approval to lead in this capacity.

Participants:

  • Commit to reading all assigned material, attending all 4 sessions of the PLC, and actively contributing to discussion, leading to strengthening their leadership capacity (within or beyond their current role).

  • Seek opportunities to apply what they are learning in their current role(s) and school setting.

  • Share authentic and meaningful feedback with the facilitator on their book study experience to support continuous improvement.
