Harvard Division of Continuing Education: Professional Development

 

 

Summary: The DCPS Career Ladder is partnering with the Harvard Division of Continuing Education to provide professional development for veteran teachers interested in developing their leadership and management skills.

Courses Offered:

  • Becoming a Leader: Developing Your Style and Making Sound Decisions

    • Designed for first-line and mid-level managers positioned to take on increasing leadership roles in their organizations, this online program analyzes the symbiotic relationship between leadership and decision making. It combines theory and practice to inform participants on how effective decisions can be made, as well as how bad decisions can be avoided. Attention will be paid to research in emotional intelligence as a framework for understanding the dual aspects of the decision-making process: intuitive vs. rational, and the respective values of both. 

  • Building Organizational Cultures​

    • Learn the relationship between culture and performance. Increase awareness of extraordinary versus mediocre, even toxic, cultures. Understand the risks of not being intentional about culture. Inspire leaders to shift into informed action. Gain actionable insight into elements that work to advance adaptive organizational culture.​

  • Managing Yourself and Others ​

    • Designed to help managers become more effective leaders, this four-day online program delves into the fundamentals of managing yourself, leading teams, and motivating others to accomplish your company’s goals. Through relevant readings, case discussions, and introspective exercises, you will gain a broader and deeper understanding of organizational culture and dynamics, management best practices, the role of the manager, and the nature of influence. As you explore your own personality, strengths, and weaknesses, you will begin to evolve a leadership style that is uniquely yours. You will return to work with newfound confidence and an action plan for continuing your growth as a leader. 

Eligible Educators: This opportunity is best suited for RISE teachers who have 3+ years of DCPS experience.
